United Way, Charities, Volunteers, Human Services -
Community Impact and Needs

Our organization maintains two standing committees established by the Board of Directors... the Community Needs Committee and the Community Investment Committee.

Community Needs Committee (CNC):

This committee is charged to identify, research and stay current with the critical health and human service needs of our community... Barnstable, Dukes and Nantucket counties.

This initiative is enabled through community volunteers who research external data, participate in community dialog and meet with regional experts on an ongoing basis. This committee meets regularly throughout the year to evaluate and recommend areas of impact and priority to our grant committee.

Community Investment Committee (CIC):

The Cape and Islands United Way is the largest non-governmental funder of health and human service agencies in our community. In the late summer of each year, we initiate a process that culminates in the awarding of  grant support for local health and human need programs. The process starts with a request for proposals from relevant service delivery agencies. These requests are due by the middle of September each year. At this point, the CIC is charged with establishing a panel of community volunteers in each of our three-impact focus areas: Nurturing and Protecting Children and Youth, Supporting and Sustaining Families and Support for Aging and Vulnerable Populations. Our normal experience is to engage over 40 volunteers in this committee/panel process annually.

The appropriate panel reviews each request, interviews with final candidates are held and final grant recommendations are made to our Board of Directors in January of the New Year. Those selected will receive their grant funds monthly throughout the coming twelve months.

It is important to us that we remain in contact with the programs receiving grant funds. To that end, each recipient is visited during the summer and a final report is issued at the end of the grant.
